Michael Moore's Bodyguard Arrested on Airport Gun Charge
Posted by: Admin on Thursday, January 20, 2005 - 05:03 AM
Gun News NEW YORK — Filmmaker Michael Moore's (search) bodyguard was arrested for carrying an unlicensed weapon in New York's JFK airport Wednesday night.

Police took Patrick Burke, who says Moore employs him, into custody after he declared he was carrying a firearm at a ticket counter. Burke is licensed to carry a firearm in Florida and California, but not in New York. Burke was taken to Queens central booking and could potentially be charged with a felony for the incident.

Moore's 2003 Oscar-winning film "Bowling for Columbine" criticizes what Moore calls America's "culture of fear" and its obsession with guns.

Unfairenheit 9/11
Posted by: Admin on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 06:34 AM
Gun News One of the many problems with the American left, and indeed of the American left, has been its image and self-image as something rather too solemn, mirthless, herbivorous, dull, monochrome, righteous, and boring. How many times, in my old days at The Nation magazine, did I hear wistful and semienvious ruminations? Where was the radical Firing Line show? Who will be our Rush Limbaugh? I used privately to hope that the emphasis, if the comrades ever got around to it, would be on the first of those and not the second. But the meetings themselves were so mind-numbing and lugubrious that I thought the danger of success on either front was infinitely slight.

Nonetheless, it seems that an answer to this long-felt need is finally beginning to emerge. I exempt Al Franken's unintentionally funny Air America network, to which I gave a couple of interviews in its early days. There, one could hear the reassuring noise of collapsing scenery and tripped-over wires and be reminded once again that correct politics and smooth media presentation are not even distant cousins. With Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, however, an entirely new note has been struck. Here we glimpse a possible fusion between the turgid routines of MoveOn.org and the filmic standards, if not exactly the filmic skills, of Sergei Eisenstein or Leni Riefenstahl.

To describe this film as dishonest and demagogic would almost be to promote those terms to the level of respectability. To describe this film as a piece of crap would be to run the risk of a discourse that would never again rise above the excremental. To describe it as an exercise in facile crowd-pleasing would be too obvious. Fahrenheit 9/11 is a sinister exercise in moral frivolity, crudely disguised as an exercise in seriousness. It is also a spectacle of abject political cowardice masking itself as a demonstration of "dissenting" bravery.

Americans Sharpen Shooting Skills
Posted by: Admin on Monday, June 21, 2004 - 07:02 AM
Gun News Americans Sharpen Shooting Skills Sunday, June 20, 2004Shooting Sports LOS ANGELES — Shooting for sport is becoming more and more popular across the country. Along with Pilates and windsurfing, clay target shooting and handgun target shooting are some of America's fastest growing sports. Some 20 million Americans participate in recreational gun activities. Those who shoot clays call it "golf with guns.""It is being looked at more as a sport and recreation, it is not all about hunting," said Rick Matulich of the San Diego Shotgun Sports Association.Target shooting dates back to the 14th century, and it became an Olympic sport in 1896. And while some worry about recreational gun safety, the government says a person is more likely to get hurt riding a bike, playing basketball or swimming."It is a great sport," said Bret Erickson , 2004 U.S. Olympic shotgun team member. "It is a sport for all ages; it is a sport for the whole family and it is a huge growing sport."http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,123134,00.html

NRA News Program Moves to Satellite Radio
Posted by: Admin on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 08:37 AM
Gun News The National Rifle Association is moving its new NRANews program to satellite radio this week. The New York Times described the broadcast as a "direct challenge to federal limits on political advocacy."
The daily radio program offers news and Second Amendment commentary. As a media organization, it is not restricted by federal campaign finance law. That means NRANews may continue broadcasting in the run-up to the November election - at a time when federal law requires political advocacy groups to stop running ads.

"There is no government licensing of journalists. Tom Paine was free to pamphlet. So are we," the newspaper quoted NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre as saying.

LaPierre said the NRA was looking to buy radio stations in the Midwest, the Rockies and the South.
