DALY CITY -- The issue is one of respect, according to advocates of banning gun shows at the Cow Palace.

Backers of state Sen. Jackie Speier's SB 1733, which would prohibit the sale of guns at the state-owned convention hall just across the San Francisco border in Daly City, steer clear of making direct links to violence in nearby San Francisco neighborhoods and guns sold at the shows. But they do say that that the gun shows, which are advertised across San Francisco as well as in the crime-ridden neighborhoods such as Sunnydale and Bayview-Hunters Point, are disrespectful for those areas trying to combat gun-related shootings and killings.

"It's disrespectful, it's a slap in the face," said Shawn Richards, the executive director of Brothers Against Guns, a Bayview-based nonprofit whose members helped spur Speier's legislation. "There was a 7-week-old baby shot, there was a police officer gunned down, it's ridiculous. Young black men and Latinos are dying."Richards held a one-man protest in front of the Cow Palace Sunday afternoon as people streamed into one of the convention hall's regular shows, the Crossroads of the West Gun Show, being held over the weekend. The issue of guns and gun violence was catapulted onto center stage after San Francisco police Officer Isaac Espinoza was killed by an AK-47 in the Bayview three weeks ago. Speier's legislation narrowly passed the Senate Public Safety Committee two weeks ago and will soon head to a full Senate vote. But gun advocates say that the politicians are targeting the wrong people. Bob Templeton, the general manager of the Crossroads of the West, said that there has been no evidence produced linking guns sold at the Cow Palace to shootings in the communities. "This is not a neighborhood gun show. People come from all over Northern California," Templeton said. "We have hunters, military-types and collectors coming here."Templeton said that there is a strict protocol for acquiring a gun from the show. There is the mandatory background check and a 10-day waiting period for any firearm, whereupon the buyer must go to a licensed seller to get the weapon -- no one can simply walk out of the Cow Palace with a gun, he said. In addition, there were San Mateo police as well as California Department of Justice agents patrolling the shows. He said it was the first protest he remembers in 19 years of promoting the gun shows. http://www.sfexaminer.com/article/index.cfm/i/050304n_firearms
