Gun News Man injured; it's 3rd incident in 10 months in area near many bars
08:19 AM CDT on Monday, August 16, 2004
By MICHAEL GRABELL / The Dallas Morning News
Shane Poncho was driving home to Oklahoma early Saturday when he came into a busy stretch of Interstate 35E near many late-night clubs and bars.
An exchange of obscene hand gestures led to gunshots being fired at Mr. Poncho's Ford Bronco. The bullets shattered a side window and hit Mr. Poncho in the back.

The assault is believed to be at least the third such shooting in the same two-mile stretch of the Stemmons Corridor since November. All three incidents happened from 2 to 3 a.m. between Motor Street and Mockingbird Lane.

"Those road-rage incidents, even though they're high-profile, I wouldn't say that there's a series of them that people should be afraid to be on the roads," said Deputy Chief Alfredo Saldaņa, who commands the Dallas Police Department's Crimes Against Persons Division, or CAPERS. "They should just be cautious."

Despite the similarities, police do not believe the shootings are related. Crime tends to spike in the after-midnight hours, and the stretch of Stemmons usually has more traffic than other areas of Dallas at that time of night.

Saturday's shooting comes as new Police Chief David Kunkle renews an effort to fight drugs and gangs. Chief Saldaņa said Chief Kunkle is particularly interested in helping officers fight late-night crime.

"He wants to reinforce the resources available to the officers who work the midnight shift not only in staffing but also in the support divisions like CAPERS and narcotics to be available to help them have an impact on crime," he said.

Shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday, Mr. Poncho and his uncle were driving north on the interstate near Commonwealth Drive when another motorist drove alongside their truck and made an obscene gesture. Police said Mr. Poncho's uncle returned the gesture, and the other driver opened fire.

Mr. Poncho, 31, was taken by ambulance to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where a relative said he had had surgery on Saturday. He remained in stable condition Sunday but was to undergo additional tests, an aunt said.

Police, who interviewed Mr. Poncho on Sunday, are looking for a gray, two-door Mitsubishi Eclipse.

On Aug. 1, a man was shot and killed less than a mile away, also on the northbound side and just before Inwood Road. The man had been shot through the passenger side window, and his red pickup crashed into the center median about 2 a.m.

A third shooting occurred about 2:30 a.m. Nov. 18, when David Griffin, 27, was shot to death while driving south on the service road of Interstate 35E. His car crashed into the bridge under the highway on Mockingbird Lane.

All three cases are under investigation, and police said anyone with information should call 214-671-3584.
